It’s Super Grover!

Do not worry citizens of Arizona. It is I, Super Grover Norquist, here to give permission.

Well, it’s official.  Even Grover Norquist says its okay for legislators to vote for the budget deal.  I wasn’t aware that he was a voter in Arizona or let alone a citizen, but hey, when did it ever matter what people’s constituents really want?

If we can actually vote on this thing, we’ll know once and for all if the voters are willing to sustain a tax to get us through this turmoil.  Of course, there will be those who vote against it no matter what, because who really wants to govern anyway?  It’s so much better to be in the opposition and the constant naysayer.  Why find a solution when you can be marginalized instead?

In the end, it’s time to let the voters vote.  Of course, that would mean some of these people would actually have to start listening to what others have to say instead of just listening to themselves talk.

That’s the problem with special interest candidate surveys. They box you into a very narrow place where if you’re finally elected to office, you may feel constrained. These speacial interests (and I like Grover Norquist, btw) will do all they can to campaign against you if you “break a pledge.” But politics is the art of compromise and no legislation is perfect. If you can get 80 percent of what you want in a bill, that’s pretty darn good. Heck, if you can get 80 percent of anything in life, that’s pretty good. But special interest surveys virtually demand 100 percent compliance with their policies. All this does is polarize elected officials and poison the working environment.
